WDTV featured a news clip about VMC/Homeland Security Programs' course, Homeland Security Planning for Campus Executives. Jodi Van Horne, the VMC's Emergency Response Medical Specialist and a course instructor, was interviewed for the broadcast. The course provides a basic overview for those institutions attempting to develop an approach to solving homeland security planning, and it provides useful resources and tools.

VMC/Homeland Security Programs took part in observing the Stadium Operations Center (SOC) at West Virginia University's Mylan Puskar Stadium. This project involved observing the functionality of the SOC and conducting tabletop exercises to study how participants worked with each other to resolve problems the center faced. An article discussing these observations and outcomes was co-authored by the VMC's director, George Trapp, and appeared in the January/February 2007 edition of the Campus Law Enforcement Journal, published by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).

Mark Fischer, Assistant Director of Program Operations, and Jodi Van Horne, Emergency Response Medical Specialist, are part of an ongoing effort at West Virginia University (WVU) to explore mass migration possibilities from the Washington, D.C. area into or through West Virginia during a major disaster. Brian Gerber, a professor of Public Administration at WVU, leads the effort funded by the National Science Foundation that studies local infrastructure emergency planning. Fischer and Van Horne offer emergency response expertise to the project. Findings from an initial survey conducted in cooperation with the State of West Virginia were presented by Gerber at a conference in Davis, W.Va. on August 23, 2006. West Virginia University is combining efforts with the City of Morgantown to improve communications during emergency incidents that occur on campus and within the city. Mountain Thunder II, a full-scale, mock disaster exercise sponsored by the VMC® in November 2002, revealed the need for an updated system and provided data that supported the decision to move to a more integrated communications system between the City and the University.

Senator Robert C. Byrd (D, W.Va.) recently included approximately $2 million in legislation for an initiative aimed at preparing first responders for terrorist attacks. The VMC® will receive this funding to continue development of its Integrated Knowledge Base and first and emergency responder training courses.

The VMC® recently received close to 900,000 in competitive grant funding from the Department of Health and Human Resources’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide bioterrorism continuing education training and curriculum enhancement programs in West Virginia.
